Erin N. Smith, PhD
Licensed Psychologist
I have been providing psychotherapy on a part-time basis for children, adolescents, and parents at Courtyard Counseling Center, LLC since 2018. I was previously licensed and practiced in the state of Ohio, where I worked in partial hospitalization, community mental health, and private practice with clients facing a range of mental health concerns. My areas of clinical interest include anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, self-harm, adjustment to life changes, and posttraumatic stress disorder. I primarily work with children, adolescents, young adults, and parents, who are struggling with these issues.
When I’m not practicing at Courtyard, I am a full-time associate professor at Susquehanna University and spend time with my husband and three children. I enjoy hiking, home decorating projects, gardening, travelling, and reading good books.
Practice Description
My therapeutic approach is warm, empathetic, and focuses on clients’ strengths. Regardless of what clients bring into therapy, I aim to provide an environment in which they can be vulnerable and share what weighs on them. My style incorporates humor and an active approach to working through the issues my clients face. In the context of a trusting therapeutic relationship, I primarily use cognitive behavioral therapy to challenge my clients to think outside of their current view of a situation, to consider different angles and thought patterns that may lead to some relief from their struggles. Therapy is at its best when there is a trusting relationship between client and therapist and when clients feel motivated to make changes in their lives. I believe strongly that my clients can make their desired changes, and I strive to help them feel comfortable and supported as they do so.
